I would like to make it into a lamp but have never been able to find a stopper and fitment for bulb and electrics for it and to be able to fit a large lampshade. Do you know where I can get this please?

Thank you for contacting me.
Those old carboys can be more than a hundred years old! I am sure the mouth is not smooth and was cut after being blown.
You can keep it in the wicker basket (especially if it’s in good shape) as the glass is fragile (sometimes thick, sometimes very thin…).
Your size of 50 liters is a huge one! I don’t know the color, but I can tell you anyway it is valuable. I have seen some in the US at $400.
If you think about selling it, I think you will have to remove it from the wicker basket to reveal its color and shape.
The clear ones are the cheapest but I have noticed that people who want a decorating item love them! And people who know them will prefer some green and blue ones.
If you want more information, please send me a picture at: laboutiquevintage.co.uk@gmail.com. I will be happy to help you more!
Have a lovely day,
Kind Regards,

Helen

My grandfather bought it years ago and it still has original wicker basket. Carboy and basket are in great shape. Was wondering if you had any idea on value. Great website!! Thanks for any help.

I am glad you have found one! You have a beauty! It looks big as well. You can remove the barrel around it if it is damaged or just not so nice. It will reveal such a beauty under it. You can clean it with white vinegar and some warm water, if it’s not enough just add some sand (round one). Some can be more than a hundred years old easily. It can be so nice as a decoration item on the floor, you can even add some fake flowers or just some sticks and it will gorgeous! Well, I hope you enjoy your Demijohn as much as I do with them! You can send me a picture if you want! I will be happy to put it online!
Have a lovely day,
Kind Regards,

Helen

We live in France and this must have been left by the previous owner. It is encased in a crude barrel shaped holder and packed in straw. The barrel shaped holder has handles and a lid. The stopper has old rag round it but the green glass is empty. I have never seen anything like it before. It stands at 22 inches high and 45 inches circumference.
